“General Patraeus, you should know that I, Qassem Suleimani, control the policy for Iran with respect to Iraq, Lebanon, Gaza, and Afghanistan. And indeed, the ambassador in Baghdad is a Quds Force member. The individual who’s going to replace him is a Quds Force member.”

Revolutionaire Eenheid strongly condemns the cowardly attack of the United States Military and the Trump regime against general Qassem Soleimani and the people of Iraq, Iran, and others in the region. The US killed the top Iranian general in a drone strike near the Baghdad International Airport in Iraq on January 2nd, 2020.

With Trump’s symbolic impeachment, the upcoming US elections, the failed coup in Venezuela, and the stalled nuclear talks with North-Korea, the Trump regime became desperate to distract the US public from all their failures. After all, in 2001, Bill Clinton did a similar thing when his impeachment was being discussed.

The attack is a massive escalation of the ongoing threats of war against Iran and will most likely trigger a strong response from the Iranian government. The general was extremely close to the supreme leader of the country. To put it bluntly, this assassination is to the Iranian government, the same as an assassination of Mike Pence would be to the US regime. It can even be said that Qassem Soleimani, as the general of the Quds forces of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps, was even more powerful than the president. Just read the message that he sent to David Patraeus to display his power:

“General Patraeus, you should know that I, Qassem Suleimani, control the policy for Iran with respect to Iraq, Lebanon, Gaza, and Afghanistan. And indeed, the ambassador in Baghdad is a Quds Force member. The individual who’s going to replace him is a Quds Force member.”

This attack, however, is more significant in geopolitical terms than anything we’ve seen in recent years. The world has reached a critical stage, similar to the times right before the first world war where the advanced capitalist countries (UK, US, The Netherlands, and France) had divided the world among each other and the upcoming capitalist powers (Japan, Italy, and Germany) were looking for a piece of the pie. Today we see the same thing happening. The west has divided the world among each other (western corporations are free to plunder pretty much the entire global south) and the upcoming capitalist countries, China, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and Russia, are looking to expand their zone of influence.

This attack on one of the main regional powers might very well be the trigger for further escalation, making him the Franz Ferdinand of the 21st century. But in contrast to the first world war, the imperialist powers will most likely fight their battles in the Middle East and other countries in the global south as selling a war to the public within the fortress of Europe will probably be too difficult.

The assassination puts many lives at risk in the already war-ravished region of the middle east. Revolutionaire Eenheid stands in solidarity with all the people in the region and supports them in their struggles against imperialism and war. We call on all people in the west to stand up against this war crime and build a strong anti-war movement. The time of sitting still is over. It is now time to rise up against imperialism.

Long live international solidarity!

Long live the struggle against imperialism!

Down with capitalism!
